Armor and recovery gear is one of the most over-specified parts of a project. The right setup matches the actual trail and travel — not the worst-case scenario you've never been in.
Start with recovery points
Rated front and rear recovery points are the highest-value, lowest-weight upgrade in this category. A bumper without proper recovery points is a missed opportunity; a winch without good attachment is a liability.
When a winch makes sense
- You wheel solo or in small groups regularly
- You travel where strap recoveries aren't always possible
- You've already needed to be winched out more than once
Most Florida overland trips never need a winch. Traction boards and tire pressure management cover the vast majority of recoveries here.
Sliders before bumpers, usually
Rock sliders are the most-used piece of armor on most projects. They protect rockers, double as a step, and absorb impacts before doors and rear quarters do.
