Tire choice is the single most-felt upgrade on a daily-driven 4x4. The wrong tire can make a great suspension feel terrible — and the right tire can make a modest setup feel polished.
When all-terrains win
- Mixed daily use with occasional trail or overland weekends
- Highway-heavy commutes
- Florida sand, fire roads, and packed trails
- Wet weather and rainy-season driving
When mud-terrains earn their place
- Deep mud, loose rock, and technical trails as the primary use
- Projects where appearance is part of the goal and the trade-offs are understood
- Vehicles that aren't the only daily driver
Modern hybrid tires (R/T-style) split the difference reasonably well. They're rarely the best at anything but rarely the worst either.
